GKS Sleep Tight Interview & Game Giveaway!

An Interview with a moongrel through another guy

by Sophia barrett

Sleep Tight was 6800% Funded on Kickstarter!

Sleep Tight is a dynamic and fast passed semi co-op card game with a unique atmosphere. Gameplay centres around a group of youngsters who are stuck in a dream… or is it more like a nightmare?

Working together, players must traverse each other’s dreams to collect fragments and try to defeat the evil Sandman – but watch out, if one of your team betrays the rest and wakes up from their dream, then the rest of you will be trapped in the nightmare forever!

This interesting concept for a print-and-play game was brought to us by The Moongrel, we reached out to see if we could get the Game Kickstart readers some exclusive insights into this exciting new game:

Sophia: So who is The Moongrel?

Moongrel’s Spokesman: First of all I am not the creator. The creator is The Moongrel – I am just speaking on his behalf. The Moongrel is a bipedal furry beast that lives in a forest and loves board games. I don’t know how he encountered board games at first, I guess he terrorized some human campers and they left some board goodies in panic leaving their tent… Anyway, he spent a lot of time looking at the cardboards until he learned to read and play. He played alone until I came after having a trip in the forest. He forced me to play some board games with him or he would kill me. Well I guess I didn’t have any other chance than to play along. We became friends and then I understood that he is not that evil in the end… he was just lonely.

Sophia: Sleep Tight looks like an exciting and fresh take on the co-op card game genre, can you tell us what inspired the theme of the game and more about the story you are trying to tell?

Moongrel’s Spokesman: The Moongrel started to talk about his friend The Sandman that lives in dreams and from time to time consumes the souls of kids. That may sound cruel, but The Moongrel is tough and thought that maybe by making a game about The Sandman and making him infamous, he would eventually see how scary and bad he is and would change his mind and leave the unfortunate kids alone…

Sophia: What games did you take inspiration from when designing Sleep Tight and why?

Moongrel’s Spokesman: It was an old system the Moongrel thought about. He was getting bored of waiting for me to take my turn to play the cards in other games we were trying (I am a slow player), so he wanted to make a game where no one waits for their turn and everyone can play all at once. I said to him… “really? That will be a mess!”

He grunted and didn’t care about my thoughts, and he was right. It is so fun and somehow addictive!

Sophia: What would you say is unique about your game – what makes it a must-play?

Moongrel’s Spokesman: I guess the feeling that you can’t count on your friends. They will help you on one turn and on the other they will betray you. Also, there is you! What will you do? Will you kill the fun of one of your companions by using them as a shield against The Sandman or will you play “fair”?

In our tests, after the game no one ever holds any grudges against the other players which is really nice (beside The Moongrel… he hates to lose… he hates double when he loses on a game he designed).

Also there is the really unpredictable Sandman mechanic that from time to time feels like he has a real intelligence in attacking the players; like he has some sort of masterplan and lurks behind every move. Maybe the game has some kind of mystical magic from beyond?

Sophia:  You’ve mentioned that this Kickstarter is a ‘precampaign’ of sorts, now the initial campaign is over and you’ve had nearly 600 backers, when could we see a physical version of Sleep Tight available for backers?

Moongrel’s Spokesman: As soon as we collect as much feedback from the players and we find out what rules possible don’t work well, needs some rebalancing or when we see that all works great and we are confident the game is ready to go in print. The Moongrel really wants to give his best!

Sophia: Without giving too much away, have you got any tips for players before the Print & Play is released in July?

Moongrel’s Spokesman: I think that it is more of a charming design than mathematical. It should be played more with passion and skills than in calculations. It is a funky design that should put on your face a grim Sandman smile 😉

Sophia: What inspired The Moongrel to release a game in the first place?

Moongrel’s Spokesman: He wants to make friends… human friends… and he thinks board games are the only way people gather (I never told him about clubs or concerts… I really hope he doesn’t find out about music and that it doesn’t inspire him to start a musical career. That would be bizarre – let’s support him by sticking him in the board game hobby).

Sophia: Where can we Game Kickstart readers find out more about the Moongrel and future campaigns?

Moongrel’s Spokesman: The website www.themoongrel.com will be available just after the P&P Sleep Tight release
